SUMMARY:Denver Arts & Venues Cultural Runway Series: Community
DESCRIPTION:On October 14\, Denver Arts & Venues (DAV) celebrates the cultural heritage that is conveyed through traditional textile work. On the runway\, we feature fabrics\, textiles and clothing from Africa\, Guatemala\, Afghanistan\, Iran and Turkey. These garments highlight the skills and techniques of dyeing\, weaving\, sewing and embellishing that have been perfected over millennia\, passed down from generation to generation. \nIn addition to showcasing traditional garments\, DAV showcases the local design community by inviting designers to present their very best looks for the audience to vote on. In the vein of “Project Runway\,” DAV will elevate the best of Denver’s fashion scene through a participatory competition. All the designers featured on the runway entered their initial designs and were selected by a panel of judges\, winning a $500 stipend to use to enhance their fashions on the catwalk. On October 14\, the audience will be able to vote for their favorites in “best concept\,” “the outfit I would most like to wear\,” “most elegant/best evening wear” and “most interesting use of unconventional materials.” Each of the audience favorites will be awarded an additional $1\,000. The winning designs will be announced at the after party immediately following the runway show. \nDAV is also thrilled to announce that the Community Runway Show will be emceed by SF1\, an accomplished emcee\, drummer\, music producer\, songwriter\, dancer and actor. He is a Berklee College of Music alumni and Grammy Award considered artist who hails from Denver. His genuine love for music instrumentation is evident in his ability to effortlessly infuse West African\, Afro Latin\, Hip Hop\, Middle Eastern\, Pop and Rock within his energetic sound and compelling live performances. SF1’s energy and personality will be sure to bring a unique flair to the event. \nArrive early to peruse the vendor market to shop for locally made artwork\, jewelry\, fashion\, body care products and more. There will also be light refreshments and a cash bar (first drink is on us)\, and a one-of-a-kind photo opportunity with a thread and yarn artwork installation by Andrea Fischer. Plus\, join us in creating a community rug with Colorado-based Tuft-Love. \nPlease note that tickets purchased in advance are the best value. Prices will increase on the day of the event. \n$50 VIP: includes front row seating\, entry to the Vendor Market at 5 p.m.\, early seating at 7:30 p.m.\, one free beverage and swag bag. \n$30 GA seated: includes second or third row seating\, entry to the Vendor Market at 5 p.m.\, seating at 7:45 p.m. and one free beverage. \n$10 Standing Room Only: includes entry to the Vendor Market at 8 p.m.\, runway entry at 8 p.m.\, one free beverage and standing room tickets at cocktail tables near the runway. \nWe strive to post the most current and accurate event information\, but changes and cancellations do occur\, so please check the official event website to confirm all details before attending.

SUMMARY:Tales in Textiles and Polished Closing Reception\, Exhibit Tour\, Curator Discussion\, and Fabric Sale
DESCRIPTION:Join Denver Arts & Venues and Shanna Shelby\, curator of exhibitions\, from 1-2 p.m. on Aug. 26 for a tour and discussion of “Tales in Textiles: Mid-Century Style” on display at McNichols Civic Center Building June 8-Aug. 27\, 2023. \nIn the vein of sustainable fashion design\, selvage and remnant fabrics highlighted in the exhibition will be available for purchase at the closing reception for both “Tales in Textiles” and “Polished: The “Candy Coated” Works of Sonny Valdez” from 2-4 p.m. following the tour and discussion. Light refreshments will be served. \nThis tour and discussion\, and the closing reception following are free and open to the public. Please RSVP. \nAbout the Exhibitions: \nTales in Textiles: Mid-Century style in design and furniture is characterized by clean lines and minimalist aesthetics. Furnishing textiles from this period were bold and innovative. The design aesthetic for the patterns drew from modern artists like Alexander Calder and Joan Miró. Innovation in manufacturing allowed for more affordable prices and thus an explosion of popularity. Despite being more than half a century old\, textiles from this period have not lost their appeal. \nThis exhibition includes a wide variety of artists and textile designers from the era\, such as Lucienne Day\, John Piper and Marian Mahler. To complement the fabrics on display\, the exhibition showcases furniture and home furnishings. \nPolished: Denver artist Moses “Sonny” Valdez established his artistic roots over the course of more than 25 years working as a custom automotive painter. With brushed metal as his canvas\, automotive paint as his medium and imagination seeding his artistic dreams\, Sonny Valdez creates contemporary abstract works of art that are hard to restrict to a certain genre. \nBorn and raised in Denver\, Valdez grew up with a tinkerer’s love of cars. As a younger man\, he opened an auto body shop with friends\, but eventually found himself on his own. Faced with the prospect of sinking or swimming\, Valdez soon made custom painting a steady part of his repertoire. The skill grew and so did the number of customers. \nHis passion for cars and talent as a custom painter kept him in business for many years\, and his award-winning custom painted cars have been featured in national automotive magazines. \nNow\, Valdez works on pieces of brushed metal\, etching unique patterns onto them with grinding tools and finishing them with “candy coated” shades of automotive paint. In addition to metal surfaces\, he also paints on wood and acrylic plexiglass. \nThis series of metal works on display at the McNichols Civic Center Building are rich in color and have a glow about them. Visitors will appreciate this automotive technique in a new form. \nWe strive to post the most current and accurate event information\, but changes and cancellations do occur\, so please check the official event website to confirm all details before attending.
